Here is an extensive list of what we leave out of our products:

Synthetic dyes: Which are often used to make liquids look a specific colour or aesthetically pleasing.

Formaldehyde: Often used to prolong the life of conventional cleaning liquids.

Synthetic perfumes: We don’t use low cost synthetic chemicals only 100% pure natural essences.

Phthalates: Very common in the product of products that use synthetic fragrances.

Phosphates: Often used for water softening and to enhance cleaning, this can stimulate excessive algae growth in receiving waters and kill fish and plant life.

Enzymes: Our non bio cleaning laundry liquids are enzyme free, they are known to cause skin irritations and asthma attacks.

Optical brighteners:  Are extremely difficult to biodegrade and can cause severe skin irritation, designed to fabrics give the illusion of whiteness, they pollute receiving drain waters.

Petroleum-derived additives: These are common in the majority of house hold cleaners containing toxic impurities that are highly irritant, often causing allergic reactions and polluting plant and animal life. 

Chemical plasticisers: Added to soaps to make them softer and easier to machine mould.

Titanium dioxide: A colouring agent that is used to enhance opacity of liquids for a clear look. Another chemical polluting water courses.

Triclosan: Often used in antibacterial soaps, this chemical was first registered as a pesticide, hazardous to animals and humans (liver and inhalation toxicity) interferes with muscle function and hormone regulation.

Sodium tallowate: A thickener produced from caustic soda, water and dead animal fat.

Urea: Another animal derived component found in other cleaning products, made from animal urine it breaks down chemical bonds in proteins.

Lanolin: A wax secreted by sheep and used in other cleaning products, not suitable for vegans.

Benzothiazolinone: A biocidal preservative can lead to skin irritation and allergic skin reactions such as contact dermatitis.

Methylisothiazolinone (MI) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI): The preservatives mi and mci are used in a wide range of shampoos, moisturisers and shower gels as well as make-up and baby wipes. But dermatologists warn people are being exposed to much higher doses than before, leading to a steep rise in allergies known as contact dermatitis where the skin becomes red and itchy and can sting and blister.

Glycerin or glycerine: Unless specifically stated that it is from a vegetable source, glycerin or glycerine will be obtained from the rendered carcasses of dead animals.

E.D.T.A. (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) This is sometimes used as a substitute for, but also in addition to, phosphates. It is a sequestering agent that attracts heavy metals such as lead and mercury, both of which have known carcinogenic properties. These heavy metals can eventually find their way back into water supplies and are extremely difficult to remove completely.

Chlorine bleaches: Commonly contained in conventional toilet cleaners, sanitisers, washing powders and dishwasher detergents. During the breakdown of these types of bleach, carcinogenic toxic substances are formed which are similar to the banned pesticide d.d.t.

Tallow: Another animal triglyceride derived from beef fat. Tallow required for cleaning products is usually sourced from intensively farmed animals as it is the cheapest source. Products containing tallow are not suitable for vegans or those who have animal welfare high on their agenda.

GMO / SMO: Genetically or synthetically modified organisms are now being added to cleaning products, which replaces the requirement for the use of palm oil. There have not been any independent safety tests to prove that these methods are safe on humans.
